SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS FROM BRITMUMS LIVE

You may just have noticed that bloggers in the UK were a little excited this weekend just gone. Twitter was bursting with tweets sharing moments and tips picked up from various talks at Britmums Live and for anyone not there it must have been a bit much- knowing others were there when you were at home turning a little bit green!

The whole Live. Love. Blog team were there of course and if you were following #notatBML you will have had a glimpse into the different things going on. We will be sharing photos and clips in Friday’s post but thought we would share some of the fab tips we picked up over the event so that you can take them away with you too.

There were so many talks covering so many angles but quite a few were focused on social media- a huge part of the blogging process. Here are the main points from each talk:

Social Media Optimisation

  •  Don’t rely on just one platform as that could be taken away at any point. If Twitter decided to shut you down what would you do?
  • Claim your username for all platforms. There are newer platforms Ello and Periscope, claim your name and leave the account until such time you might need it.
  • Brands like to see you have presence so try and grow all of your accounts at a similar rate.
  • Connect your accounts so that when you post to one it duplicates. Saying that make sure you try and keep some information specific to some accounts so people don’t feel like they can follow one and get everything. Mix it up every now and then!
  • Be recognisable.
  • Use schedulers to make your life easier.

Pinterest

  • Pin your pinnable blog posts to a specific board for your blog and then from there to any specific category boards.
  • Have a location specific board for your area.
  • Where possible pin from the source and go through old pins to ensure they are genuine.
  • Seasonable events start two months in advance so start pinning early and have those boards at the top!
  • Make sure you have a business account and that you are verified.
  • Apply for Rich Pins.  This gives you longer descriptions, bold text.
  • Only watermark if you took the image yourself.
  • Remember the Alt Text of your picture is very important.
  • If you have the Yoast WP plugin then the meta description section is also important.  Fill this in and it adds additional information to your pin.
  • Go for long descriptions- the more words you use the more chance of Google creating a match when someone searches for something.

Instagram

  • What looks good to the eye does not necessarily translate to photo.
  • When you take a photo you should have a triangle of colour- so if you had a pink vase you may have a pink notepad and a pink cup in the photo too. The remainder of the objects would be neutral so as not to distract the eye.
  • Objects in the photo should never touch side by side. They should either overlap completely or have a gap between them.
  • Group objects in odd numbers, the only exception being a pair.
  • Draw the eye into the shot by using layers- objects in the forefront and in the background with the focus on the main object in the middle.
  • Add an extra element of interest. Don’t just have a pair of shoes, have a pebble at the side. Don’t just have a pile of books, have a half eaten apple at the side. Just something to help tell the story.
  • Use negative space- less is more.
  • Use backdrops to create a beautiful background. Planks of wood, wallpaper, fabric, chalk boards, foam board are all great for creating a blank canvas to your objects.

Youtube

  • Make a short welcome video, around 30 seconds is fine. It gives people an idea about what to expect from your channel.
  • Make sure your titles and descriptions are optimised- use key words that you know people would search for. The descriptions are crawled by Google so make sure you fill them out.
  • Bear mobiles in mind when you are creating your thumbnails- tiny writing is no use!
  • The image you choose for your customised thumbnail is more important than the text. Take a specific photo rather than using a screen shot.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask people to subscribe or head over to your blog – don’t ask don’t get!
  • If you are doing a tutorial style post then show a quick before and after at the beginning of the video- make them want to watch to the end!
  • Watch time is more important than subscribers- the youtube algorithm favours channels which have great videos that keep people watching from beginning to end!
  • Organise your playlist so people can find similar content.
  • When you share your content share from your playlist- it is a different url than the original. That way they will be offered other videos from your playlist when they finish watching the current video.
  • Use Infocards in your videos to encourage viewers to interact with related content i.e. blog posts
  • Add a branded watermark to encourage more subscriptions
  • Use the Creator Studio app- this will give you related tutorials to help you build your site.
  • Be consistent – post a new video the same day every week/  month so they know when to expect you!
  • Set up a black list of words you never want to see, that way any trolls cannot get to you!
  • Once you get to 5K subscribers you can have access to the Youtube studio in London.
